Rebbi Shlomo Eliezer Alfandari - Yiddish

Rebbi Shlomo Eliezer Alfandari, affectionately termed the "Sabba Kadisha", was a Rav, Posek, and Mekubal. He was the chief Rabbi in Damascus and later Tzfas, and a prominent figure of Torah authority in his generation. After his marriage, he adopted young orphans into his home and raised them as his own. Upon refusing to sign a memorandum for the Turkish sultan mandating Jews to draft into the army with such definitive force, the Sultan was highly impressed and called him "Chacham Bashi".
