Klonimus is a rambunctious boy, full of life, in a totally gentile city. He yearns for his hometown — to go back and eventually learn in yeshivah. But then his grandfather becomes ill and Klonimus is sent to an orphanage hostile to Jews.

His only way to survive is to turn solely to Hashem.
